Protecting you

If you're running your own business, or are employed as a nanny or in a nursery, you'll benefit from PACEY's protection.

All registered childcare settings - childminders, nurseries and nannies - are required by law to have public liability insurance (PLI) to cover them in their work with children.

PACEY offers specially designed PLI* to give the broadest range of cover to childminders and nannies, at the best price possible. We work closely with our insurance providers to ensure that we deliver the best policies to our members, year on year. Our priority is our members, and the children they care for.

Specialist insurance policies from PACEY

We offer PACEY members the following types of insurance cover, all tailor-made to meet the needs of childcare professionals:

  • public liability insurance for childminders and nannies underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance – read our policy summary or call us on 0300 003 0005 for more information
  • employer's liability insurance included free with our public liability insurance cover
  • specialist car and home contents cover for childminders - our HomeMinder and MotorMinder policies give your home, car and belongings the added protection they need when you're running a childminding business.

What is public liability insurance for?

Public liability insurance covers you for any claims made against you by a third party whilst in the process of delivering the services you are contracted to deliver.

This means that if a child in your care injures themselves, and you are found to be responsible, any damages you may have to pay are insured for. It means that there is always a way to pay for any accidents. And because children are the most valuable thing we have, PLI for childcarers needs to be complex and complete, to cover you for every eventuality.

PLI gives the parents of the children you care for peace of mind – and it gives you peace of mind too.

PACEY's standard PLI cover is for £10,000,000.

How do I choose cover?

If you are shopping around for your childminder or nanny public liability insurance, you need to carefully consider the whether the cover offered by an insurer or broker is appropriate for you.

Some policies seem to be cheap and cheerful, or are even offered free with another purchase, but when it comes to claims they simply aren’t enough and you could find yourself facing hefty bills. Even worse, you may find you are not operating legally.

If your insurance, for example, doesn’t cover you for what you consider to be day-to-day childcare practices, such as outdoor play or using trampolines, letting the children do these activities would invalidate your cover. PACEY’s bespoke PLI* for childminders and nannies covers both these activities, and much more.

Always check the policy summary to make sure you are able to continue to do the things you do in your setting. Many insurance policies only cover you up to £2,000,000 – PACEY’s public liability insurance* cover has a standard limit of indemnity of £10,000,000. We also offer employer's liability cover with a standard limit of indemnity of £10,000,000.

Employer’s Liability Insurance

If you employ a childminding assistant or other staff in your setting, such as a cook or SEND Assistant, you will also need to ensure you have the appropriate Employer’s Liability Insurance (ELI) in place for your business. ELI works in a similar way to PLI – if your employee is injured under your employ, you are insured against any claims that arise. PACEY members receive free ELI activation as part of their PACEY PLI insurance. Under PACEY's policy, you and up to two staff are covered.

What about damage to my setting or car?

Damage to your belongings or business tools is covered separately. Childminders may need specialist car insurance to carry children in a "business" capacity, and specialist home contents insurance makes sure they are covered for the little accidents little people can cause.
