Member concerns helped influence decision

Liz Bayram, PACEYSpeaking about yesterday's announcement by Nick Clegg that he will not go ahead with proposals to change current childcare ratios, PACEY's Liz Bayram (pictured right) said: "PACEY, with the support of you our members, has played a key role in ensuring government understand the quality and safety concerns childcare professionals and parents had about these proposals.

"Indeed the DPM has quoted PACEY's research project with IPPR as evidence why Government has decided to drop this proposal. In this research project, hundreds of PACEY members took time again to re-state their concerns around ratio change, childminder agencies and more.

"The time you have taken to tell us what you think via IPPR's research; by attending policy consultations, writing to your local MP, raising your concerns at regional forums and on PACEY Local have all made a difference, so thank you.

"Whilst it is great news the ratio proposals have been scrapped, there remain other proposals that risk reducing childcare quality. PACEY will continue to call for plans to develop childminder agencies to stop and for government to reflect again on its proposals to remove the statutory duties that require local authorities to support and train their local registered childcare providers.

"So - children, parents and childcare professionals - have something to celebrate today. But the campaigning is not over yet. PACEY knows we will be able to count on your support to continue to demand that these and other proposals do not go ahead."
