Ofsted gradings change

From today, 4 November 2013, settings inspected by Ofsted will be subject to new gradings. The old grading of "Satisfactory" has been replaced with "Requires improvement".

PACEY's Chief Executive said, "Ofsted regulation and inspections are the best way to improve quality. The new 'requires improvement' grading, so long as it is underpinned by robust Ofsted inspection processes, will mean parents better understand what good quality care looks like for their children and will encourage more providers to improve.

"This is critical when we know that it is only high quality childcare and early learning that delivers the best start in life for all children but in particular for children living in disadvantage."

New self-evaluation form (SEF)

The revised Ofsted Self Evaluation Form (SEF) will be in use from 4 November. Few changes have been made, therefore members are able to simply transfer current SEF content onto this new form.

The following changes have been made: Section 2 removed: ‘the RAG rating the local authority may give you to indicate the level of intervention they offer.’

  • Change to “requires improvement” instead of “satisfactory”.
  • Change to reference page numbers in evaluation schedule and Ofsted SEF guidance.

Please note that the ‘requires improvement’ judgement applies to all providers from 4 November, including childminders. However, the revised monitoring, re-inspection timetable and improvement support will not apply to childminders at this time as Ofsted will be consulting further later in the year.
