Ofsted not meeting inspection targets

Sky News has today released data on the regularity of Ofsted's early years inspections, which suggests that many registered childcare settings are waiting longer for reinspection than the current limit of 47 months set by Ofsted. The data also suggests that almost one in ten of the registered nurseries and childminders in the data had not been inspected for more than 5 years.

Commenting on this issue, PACEY Chief Executive Liz Bayram said:

"It is of course a concern that, according to this data, Ofsted has not met its own inspection commitments. It is of particular concern to hear some settings are operating having never been inspected. Ofsted needs to better explain why this is so.

“Ofsted is now giving nurseries and childminders that ‘require improvement’ a greater focus and earlier repeated inspections, just as they do for schools. This is good news but only so long as they maintain their inspections of ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ providers every 3 - 4 years This is especially important at a time when Ofsted has made clear it is demanding more from providers before they are graded as ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’, and when the local authority advice and support that so many nurseries and childminders have relied on has decreased due to government funding changes.

“Parents should be reassured, however, that Ofsted's official statistics show that quality is improving year on year in childcare settings, with 78% now judged ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’. This is a testament to the dedication of childcare professionals who are delivering quality care in challenging times. A setting's Ofsted grade is one aspect of its practice and parents should also look for other indicators of quality before choosing a childcare setting for their child: for example, by asking about the qualification of the staff, the setting’s ongoing training and development plan and seeking views of other parents using the setting.”
