Ofsted publishes Early years and childcare registration handbook

Ofsted has published a new Early years and childcare registration handbook. It is available online now.

The handbook has been designed to include everything childcare providers need to know about registering as a childcare professional including:

  • who needs to register on the Early Years Register and the Childcare Register (and who is exempt)
  • how to register
  • how Ofsted assesses suitability for registration

It includes a section on how to apply for approval of additional premises. From 1 January 2016, childminders and childcare on domestic premises (CDP) will be allowed to provide childcare on non-domestic premises (i.e. outside of their homes), for up to half of the time.

To coincide with the launch of the new handbook, Gill Jones, Ofsted Early Education Deputy Director, has written a blog for Nursery World summing up the latest figures and outcomes of the first 3,500 inspections, following the new common inspection framework which was implemented on 1 September 2015.

Gill’s blog highlights that 97% nursery schools are now rated as either good or outstanding, but standards amongst childminders have risen at the fastest rate.
