Jenny Chapman has been confirmed as the new shadow minister for childcare, following on from Pat Glass’s departure as she goes on to become shadow minister for Europe. She will be joining a team headed up by Shadow Education Secretary Lucy Powell.
She has been MP for Darlington since 2010 and previously was shadow prisons minister. She has been a governor at four schools and colleges in Darlington and has volunteered at a number of charities and community groups in the town including Darlington Children’s Trust and Newblood Live, a youth music charity.
Liz Bayram, Chief Executive of the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years, said:
“We’d like to congratulate Jenny Chapman on being appointed as the shadow childcare minister. We look forward to working with her closely in the coming months as the Government seeks to implement the doubling of the free early education entitlement for 3- and 4-year-olds.
In order to deliver a high quality childcare offer for families, it is vital that barriers are removed that currently make it difficult for childminders and smaller group settings to provide funded places. We would also welcome the shadow minister’s support for a workforce development strategy to help early years professionals improve their skills and progress their careers and we look forward to sharing our ideas on this at the earliest opportunity.”
