Following the Welsh Assembly Elections earlier this month and the announcement that Carwyn Jones has now been elected First Minister a statement has been released by him setting out the priorities for the coming months, while also announcing the Cabinet who will work closely alongside him.
PACEY Cymru welcomes the inclusion and obvious high priority of childcare within this statement.
Carwyn James said;
"Childcare: we recognise this is one of the biggest challenges facing families in Wales, and we will prioritise work to deliver 30 hours free childcare for working parents. Key to our work in developing and rolling out this offer will be quality of provision and equity of access - both in terms of geographical reach and language."
Carl Sargeant has been confirmed as the new Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Children, which will include responsibility for childcare, with Kirsty Williams confirmed as the Cabinet Secretary for Education.
Discussions have already begun around the model for a potential childcare offer and PACEY Cymru alongside key partners within Cwlwm, Welsh Government and the wider sector are closely involved in this. In these discussions we always ensure we represent the views and needs of members, alongside consideration of the needs of children, their families and the wider childcare sector to achieve the best outcomes for all. This is an exciting and challenging time to be working within the childcare sector in Wales.
We will keep you posted on further developments as they are announced and work progresses in this area.
