Promoting sleep in the early years

The Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years (PACEY) has partnered with The Children’s Sleep Charity to develop a unique sleep resource for childcare professionals.

The new downloadable poster entitled ‘And so to bed… promoting sleep in the early years’ is a quick reference guide for practitioners to use in their settings. It contains guidance on the average amount of day time and night-time sleep required according to age; as well as a series of practical tips and advice. Colourful and bright, it can be used in conjunction with parents to help promote the need for a routine and how well-placed day time naps aid night-time sleep.

Quality sleep supports healthy childhood development, and PACEY members see first-hand the impact of sleep deprivation in a child. PACEY has partnered with The Children’s Sleep Charity to be able to offer accurate information to help practitioners, not just in their settings, but also for them to be able to provide the best and most up to date advice to parents.

The Children’s Sleep Charity aims to ensure that all children are supported to get a good night’s sleep. The charity offers range of services from working directly with parents to training professionals in the NHS. Focused on working in partnership with families, the organisation advocates a gentle approach to making lasting changes to a child’s sleep patterns.

Vicki Dawson, Founder, The Children’s Sleep Charity comments: “Sleep deprivation can have a huge impact on a child’s physical wellbeing, and also impacts on cognitive functioning and concentration. In addition, lack of sleep at an early age can put children at risk of obesity. Childcare professionals have a vital role to play in promoting sleep. Structured sleep is a key part of a high quality childcare setting, and we are delighted to be working with PACEY to raise awareness of this important issue.”

Liz Bayram, Chief Executive, PACEY says: “Sleep (or lack of it) is a major concern for parents, particularly those with very young children, and practitioners. We know from our members that parents turn to them for advice and can often be anxious about how childcare settings can support their child’s sleeping routine. Through this partnership not only were we able to create an invaluable resource to offer much-needed practical help and guidance, but our members now have access to highly regarded sleep experts. By working with The Children’s Sleep Charity we are able to ensure that our members can support both parents and children to help them all get a good night’s sleep.”

The "And so to bed..." poster is available to download free for PACEY members or £1.00 for non-members. In addition, a more in-depth sleep factsheet is available for PACEY members.
