CSSIW and update on SASS

Over the summer in 2016 all childcare and play providers in Wales were required by Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) to complete their Self Assessment of Service Statement (SASS) part one using CSSIW's new online system. CSSIW have now confirmed the plans for collection of information for the second part of the SASS and have contacted all childcare and play providers in Wales to give an update.

PACEY provided extensive support and guidance for members in 2016 around the SASS part 1 including telephone and email support and online resources

Most providers completed SASS part one on time, but for those of you who didn’t, CSSIW has written to you to advise you that you'll still need to complete SASS part one this spring, along with SASS part two thorugh CSSIW's online system.

What is SASS part two?

SASS part two incorporates your Quality of Care Review and a self-evaluation. CSSIW will be producing guidance and a template to help you do this. Information for SASS part two will be collected through CSSIW's online system in May/June 2017.

SASS part two will also include your Statement of Purpose, so it’s really important that this is up-to-date. You can start preparing and updating this now.  The key point is to ensure that the changes to regulation related to the care of children over eight is incorporated in your Statement of Purpose as CSSIW have made us aware of issues in relation to some of these not being updated.

Within SASS part two CSSIW will also be asking about staff numbers, training, health and safety and the environment, policies and procedures, risk assessments and compliance with other regulations.

Guidance is available for PACEY members in Wales on writing and reviewing their Statement of Purpose, Policies and Procedures in our online guide.  Further resources are available in the Members Area around the topics above if support is needed.

What do I need to do next?

CSSIW will be issuing further guidance on SASS part two in February and will be contacting all providers ahead of SASS part two going live in May/June to remind them about the process and what action they need to take to meet their legal requirements.  PACEY Cymru will then develop further guidance and support for members.

If you completed SASS part one through CSSIW’s online system in summer 2016 CSSIW will be in touch with you via email about this to inform you of the next steps, so it’s particularly important that they have your correct contact details. You can log in to your CSSIW Online account to ensure they have your correct email address.  If you can’t access your account because of technical problems please email cssiw.online@wales.gsi.gov.uk

If you did not complete SASS part one CSSIW will be contacting you by letter to inform you of the next steps you need to take and how this will impact on any upcoming inspections.  You will be required to submit SASS part one and SASS part two through the online system in May/June 2017.
