DBS update service no longer mandatory, but strongly recommended

There have been two updates from Ofsted that childminders should be aware of:

  1. Regulation of services on Childcare Register: Framework
There has been a change to 'making an application' section stating that signing up to the DBS Update service is strongly recommended but no longer mandatory. Childminders still require a DBS when becoming a childminder, however this will now stay in place and will not have to be updated yearly using the DBS update services. However, if circumstances change then an update would need to be done.
  2. Become a childminder: pre-registration briefing
Again, amendments regarding change in DBS update service have been made. Ofsted strongly recommends signing up to the DBS update service, but this is no longer mandatory and slide 19 has been changed within the presentation to reflect this.

PACEY will continue to strongly recommend that all childminders sign up to the DBS update service. Find support on becoming a childminder as well as business advice over on our free toolkit, Business Smart. We have also published some frequently asked questions about the DBS checks.
