BBC Radio 4's You and Yours programme today focused on the serious decline in the childminding profession in England, with two active childminders sharing their experiences. Discussions focused mainly on the serious lack of funding for the profession and issues around government funded places.
Liz Bayram, PACEY Chief Executive comments:
"Today's discussion did the right thing to highlight the decline in childminding and that government funding of early education is a big issue. However, it's not the only reason and we need more joined-up thinking, not just from government, but from others who are involved in supporting families. Getting registered as a childminder in the first place is very challenging, especially now there is no start-up grant to help you. A lack of parental and others' understanding that childminders are registered and delivering the same curriculum as nurseries and pre-schools also means many parents are never encouraged to think about childminding as an option for their child.
"For many children and families, especially aged 2 and under, childminding provides the quality, flexiblity and personalised childcare they require. Much more needs to be done to support and encourage more people to become childminders, to help parents make informed choices and to ensure childminders earn enough to stay in what is an amazingly rewarding profession."
