Yesterday (25 October) the new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appointed Gillian Keegan MPGillian Keegan MP as Secretary of State for Education at the Department for Education, replacing former education secretary Kit Malthouse MP.
Gillian Keegan was most recently Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. She was Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills at the Department for Education during 2020 to 2021.
Helen Donohoe, Policy Advisor at PACEY comments:
“PACEY congratulates the Gillian Keegan on her appointment and we welcome her back to the education sector. With the appointment of the fifth education minister in only four months, our members will be looking for stability, and assurance from policy-makers that their concerns are being heard and addressed. As such we have written to the new Secretary of State and will be seeking a meeting as soon as possible to ensure she understands the crucial need for action as the sector faces its most challenging time yet.
“Childminders, nurseries and pre-schools play a critical role in supporting children after the pandemic and in delivering government’s ‘levelling up’ plans, so we urge the new Secretary of State to finally put in place a strategic and focused long-term plan for the sector that addresses the underfunding, recruitment and retention challenges and the soaring costs that are driving quality early years and childcare settings to close their doors.”
