The First Minister has announced the appointment of Rocio Cifuentes as the new Children’s Commissioner for Wales.

Rocio will take up the position in April 2022 when Sally Holland’s tenure as Commissioner ends.

The Commissioner promotes and protects children’s rights and ensures that the Welsh Government’s policies and legislation benefit children and young people.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said:

'The role of Children’s Commissioner for Wales is an extremely important one – the pandemic has caused huge disruption to the lives of children. This role will help to shape the future for a generation of children, whose lives have been shaped by coronavirus. That’s why it’s so important to continue to have a strong voice to speak up for them and to inform our decision making.

I want to pay tribute to Sally Holland for all her work during her time as Children’s Commissioner. Sally has been a strong advocate for the children and young people in Wales – from embedding children’s rights in key pieces of legislation, to providing an insight into children’s experiences of the pandemic via the large-scale, internationally renowned ‘Coronavirus and me’ surveys. Sally Holland has made an impressive and long-lasting contribution to a generation of children in Wales.

Now, more than ever, the decisions we take as a Welsh Government must have the voice of children and young people at its very core and I’m proud that Rocio Cifuentes as our new Commissioner, will carry out this very important role.'

Rocio Cifuentes said:

'It’s an immense honour and privilege to be appointed as the Children’s Commissioner for Wales. As the First Minister says, the role of Commissioner will be more important now than it ever has been, delivering for the generation of children that have lived through Coronavirus.

To all the children and young people of Wales, I make the commitment today to ensure your voice, your views and your future is at the heart of everything we do.'

Mae’r Prif Weinidog wedi cyhoeddi mai Rocio Cifuentes fydd Comisiynydd Plant newydd Cymru.

Bydd Rocio yn cychwyn yn y swydd ym mis Ebrill 2022 pan fydd cyfnod Sally Holland yn dod i ben.

Mae'r Comisiynydd yn gyfrifol am hyrwyddo a diogelu hawliau plant, a sicrhau bod polisïau a deddfwriaeth Llywodraeth Cymru o fudd i blant a phobl ifanc.

Dywedodd y Prif Weinidog, Mark Drakeford:

'Mae rôl Comisiynydd Plant Cymru yn un hynod bwysig – mae’r pandemig wedi amharu’n ddifrifol ar fywydau plant. Bydd y rôl yn helpu i lunio’r dyfodol i genhedlaeth o blant y mae’r coronafeirws wedi bod yn rhan enfawr o’u bywydau. Dyma pam ei bod mor bwysig parhau i gael llais cryf, fel bod rhywun yn eiriol dros blant ac yn cyfrannu at y broses o wneud penderfyniadau.

Hoffwn dalu teyrnged i Sally Holland am ei holl waith fel Comisiynydd Plant. Mae Sally wedi bod yn eiriolwr cryf dros blant a phobl ifanc yng Nghymru – o wreiddio hawliau’r plentyn mewn darnau allweddol o ddeddfwriaeth i roi cipolwg i ni ar brofiadau plant yn ystod y pandemig, drwy’r arolygon eang ‘Coronafeirws a fi’ sydd wedi cael cydnabyddiaeth ryngwladol. Mae Sally Holland wedi gwneud cyfraniad aruthrol i genhedlaeth o blant yng Nghymru, a fydd yn parhau am gyfnod hir iawn.

Nawr, yn fwy nag erioed o’r blaen, mae’n rhaid i’n penderfyniadau ni, fel Llywodraeth Cymru, adlewyrchu lleisiau plant a phobl ifanc. Rwy’n falch mai Rocio Cifuentes, ein Comisiynydd newydd, fydd yn gwneud y rôl bwysig hon.'

Dywedodd Rocio Cifuentes:

'Mae cael fy mhenodi’n Gomisiynydd Plant Cymru yn fraint ac anrhydedd o’r mwyaf. Fel ddywedodd y Prif Weinidog, Mark Drakeford, mae rôl y Comisiynydd nawr cyn bwysiced ag y bu erioed, wrth i ni gyflawni ar gyfer y genhedlaeth o blant sydd wedi byw dan gysgod Covid-19.

Rwy’n ymrwymo heddiw i sicrhau bod llais, safbwynt a dyfodol holl blant a phobl ifanc Cymru wrth galon popeth yr ydym yn ei wneud.'
