Childcare providers in Wales, including child minders, can now apply for up to £5,000 to cover loss of income between 1 April 2020 to 30 June 2020. This is a grant to provide financial assistance for CIW-registered childcare businesses which have experienced a reduction in net income as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak and have not been able to access grants from other UK or Welsh Government schemes.

PACEY Cymru recently reported that funding of over £4 million has been announced by the Welsh Government to support childcare providers affected by COVID-19 and who have been unable to access other business support schemes through a Childcare Provider Grant.

Eligibility

You need to be registered with Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW)

You cannot get the grant if you have successfully applied for or had funding from the following schemes:

  • Business rate grants administered by your local authority
  • Economic Resilience Fund (ERF)
  • Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS)
  • Welsh Government Start-Up Grant
  • Third Sector Resilience Fund (WCVA)
  • Mudiad Meithrin grant scheme

The Mudiad Meithirn grant scheme is funded from the Third Sector Resilience Fund. Childcare providers cannot have funding under both this grant and the Mudiad Meithrin grant scheme for this reason.

You can apply for the grant even if you have received funding from the following schemes:

  • Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS)
  • Childcare Offer Wales
  • Coronavirus Childcare Assistance Scheme (C-CAS)
  • Foundation Phase Nursery (FPN) funding
  • Flying Start

Who can apply?

A grant of up to £5,000 is available to CIW registered childcare businesses that have been affected by the Covid-19 outbreak. Your net income for April to June 2020 must have reduced compared to April-June 2019 due to COVID-19 and you must not have been able to access the various other grant schemes offered by UK and Welsh Governments. Or, alternatively, if you started trading on or after 2 April 2019, you may be eligible for a grant of up to £2,500 if you suffered a net loss for the period 1 April 2020 to 30 June 2020 and meet all of the other criteria.

How to apply

Businesses can apply for the grant by using the eligibility checker on the Business Wales website. If eligible, you will be invited to apply to your local authority. You must include your supporting evidence with your application. Applications without supporting evidence will not be considered.

Scanned documents and photos are acceptable forms of evidence for this purpose.

The Childcare Provider Grant is open to applications from the 24th August 2020 until the fund is fully committed or 31st October 2020, whichever is earlier. Applications will be dealt with on a first come first served basis.
