NEWS: DfE publishes specific guidance for childminders

Additional actions for childminders

Today (13 January) The Department for Education (DfE) has published a new webpage: Additional guidance for childminders operating during the pandemic. This outlines what registered childminders in England need to know about operating their business when somebody in their household has tested positive for coronavirus or is a close contact, and the various options for keeping their business open if they cannot operate from the home.

Please note this is not new advice, but it has been compiled into a more accessible web format, sitting alongside the general Actions for Early Years and Childcare Providers guidance.

PACEY has been working with the DfE to ensure that registered childminders have access to clear and up-to-date advice and guidance along with the rest of the sector, so we hope that this update is welcomed by our members.

Household members isolating in an outbuilding

Seperate to this guidance, the DfE recently confirmed to PACEY that childminders with a positive case in their household can operate in the main building of the house if the positive case (or person displaying symptoms) isolates in a suitable outbuilding. You must meet the below requirements:

  • The person self-isolating does not enter the building where you are working at any time during their self-isolation
  • there is no one else living in the household that is required to self-isolate because they have symptoms or a positive test
  • close-contacts that are required to self-isolate do not have any contact with the children being cared for
  • a thorough clean of the property (including window opening) is conducted before childminding

and the outbuilding/extension:

  • has its own entrance/exit and you don’t have to enter your home to access it
  • doesn’t have direct access to the main house

Please do remember that if an individual is self-isolating in an outbuilding, it will be important that someone checks regularly on their welfare.
