Stratford-on-Avon MP Nadhim Zahawi has been announced as the new Secretary of State for Education, as part of a wider government reshuffle. Senior cabinet posts were announced late yesterday and it is expected that some changes to junior ministerial roles will be today.
Nadhim Zahawi, who replaces Gavin Williamson, was most recently the Minister for Covid Vaccine Deployment. He also served as Children’s Minister from 2018-19, where he had responsibility for early education and childcare.
Liz Bayram, Chief Executive at PACEY comments:
“We welcome Nadhim Zahawi back to education and hope his appointment will provide an opportunity for his department to focus on a long term plan for childcare and early education. Childminders, nurseries and pre-schools play a critical role not only in supporting children’s recovery from the pandemic but also in delivering government’s ‘levelling up’ plans.
“PACEY will be seeking an early meeting with the Secretary of State to ensure he understands the urgent need for action as the sector struggles with, among other things, underfunding, recruitment challenges and declining childminder registrations. At PACEY we know that by working proactively with government we can address these challenges and the sooner we start to do so, the brighter the future will be for children and families and the sector too.”
