Welsh Government publishes 10 year Childcare, Play and Early Years Workforce Plan

The Welsh Government has published their 10 year Childcare, Play and Early Years Workforce Plan focusing delivery on the three key themes of;

• Attracting high quality new entrants to the sector;
• Raising standards and skills across the sector; and
• Investing in building capacity and capability across the sector to support economic growth and sustainability.

Huw Irranca-Davies, Minister for Children and Social Care stated 'Our ambition is to develop a highly skilled childcare, play and early years’ workforce, which is engaged in a profession regarded as a career of choice, and valued by our society for the vital role it plays in supporting our children’s learning and development.

To take forward our ambition, we want to attract the right people into a career in childcare and early years with the skills to provide high-quality care, education and play opportunities for our children.  We want the childcare and play sector to be able to grow sustainably and offer high-quality care and opportunities for career progression to its workforce.'

Claire Protheroe, Direct Services Manager from PACEY Cymru comments:

“PACEY are pleased that the ambition from the Welsh Government includes childcare and play being seen as a valued career of choice.  There is work required to support this cultural change in society and the clear references within the plan to the work of Cwlwm and PACEY show how key partnership working is to take this forward alongside the other aims.  PACEY Cymru has supported the development of this plan and we recognise the need to ensure this is a live document that evolves to meet the needs of the sector.  PACEY will continue to work with key partners, and engage with members, to ensure the success of the plan over coming months and years. We hope to see DfE include a similar level of ambition and commitment to the workforce strategy still in development in England.”

You can read the full plan here.  Importantly for PACEY is the reference to the joint working with Cwlwm within the plan and the work with PACEY Cymru on the development of new pre-registration training for childminders.  More on these will follow in news updates in coming months.
