I CAN, the children’s communication charity has launched Chatterbox 2017 – its annual early years event for children aged 0 to 5, kicking off during the week of 8 May 2017. Chatterbox 2017 aims to raise awareness around the importance of good speech, language and communication for all children and I CAN are calling on all early years settings to get involved. As there is no fundraising element this year, anyone and everyone can take part!
Now in its 16th year, I CAN’s Chatterbox event encourages childminders and practitioners in nurseries and early years settings to support and develop children’s communication skills.
I CAN will provide early years settings with five fun and engaging activities, one for every day of the week. The Chatterbox activities have been developed by I CAN’s very own speech and language experts and focus on the core areas of children’s early language including listening and attention, understanding what is said, learning and using new words, building sentences and talking socially.
Chatterbox is being supported by TTS, suppliers of high quality educational resources, and all settings taking part will be in with the chance of winning vouchers to spend on supplies. To enter, you just need to send a photo of your Chatterbox activity. There will be a first, second and third prize up for grabs.
Kate Freeman, Lead Communication Advisor for I CAN, said: “Chatterbox is a fantastic opportunity to get children chatting and give them the best possible start in life. Early language skills are crucial to later development. Without these skills, children will struggle to learn, make friends and reach their full potential. We know that 1 in 10 children in the UK – that’s two or three in every classroom and more than one million across the country – are struggling because of difficulties with their speech and language, which is why raising awareness about early speech and language development during Chatterbox week is so vital”.
If you are interested in taking part in Chatterbox 2017 please visit www.ican.org.uk/chatterbox-challenge for updates about the event and where the activities will soon be available to download. For any other queries about the event please email us at email@example.com.
In the meantime, I CAN want to hear from all early years practitioners about their experiences of support for children’s speech, language and communication! The Bercow: Ten Years On review is an opportunity to share views about support currently available for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).
