Questions to ask a nanny
Are you looking for a nanny to take care of your child? To ensure you find an experienced childcare professional we recommend that you begin by asking a series of questions to get a feel for their knowledge and expertise.
We’ve rounded-up questions you can ask when interviewing for a nanny that will give you an understanding of their skills along with appropriate answers to look out for; helping you feel confident and trusting in your choice of quality childcare. What experience/qualifications do you have?
England
Nannies that are registered on the childcare register in England must have a level 2 qualification in childcare or training in the common core skills as set out in the document ‘common core of skills and knowledge for the children’s workforce’. Nannies may have a relevant level 3 qualification or above. They must have a 12 hour paediatric first aid certificate too. In addition they should undertake regular CPD which may include workshops, online training, reading childcare magazines etc
Wales
Nannies on CIW's Home Childcare Providers Scheme in Wales must be over 18 years of age and have the unit or qualification on the Social Care Wales List. They must have a current paediatric first aid certificate too. In addition they should undertake regular CPD which may include workshops, online training, reading childcare magazines etc
Are you registered or approved with Ofsted/CIW?
Nannies in England may choose to register on the voluntary part of the Childcare Register. Nannies in Wales may choose to join CIW's Home Childcare Providers Scheme. Using a registered or approved nanny may help with associated childcare costs through the use of childcare vouchers or tax free childcare.
How do you ensure the safety of the children in your care?
Nannies should risk assess areas both within the home and when out and about, as well as recording any accidents or incidents and medication given.
What activities would you do with the children?
Nannies should provide children with a range of activities throughout the day based on their interests and stage of development.
How would you plan a typical day?
Check that they are able to consider meal and nap times, school runs and any other requirements that you may need.
What types of food would you prepare?
Nannies should be able to provide healthy and nutritious meals and be aware of any dietary requirements and allergies.
How do you manage children's behaviour?
Nannies will be using positive methods such as distraction and must not threaten or give corporal punishment.
