Becoming a childminder
Want to be a childminder in England? Thinking about doing our Preparing to Work in Home-Based Childcare course? Here are 5 reasons why you should!
1. It’s an NCFE/Cache accredited qualification
We’re really proud of our Preparing to Work in Home-Based Childcare course. (That’s a bit of a tongue twister so we call it HBCA for short!). It’s a NCFE/Cache accredited qualification. NCFE/Cache is nationally recognised as the leader in developing early years qualifications.
The ‘A’ in HBCA stands for Award. It’s a Level 3 Award packed full of interesting information that will give you the tools you need to tackle your new career with confidence. HBCA is a regulated qualification (officially recognised) and many of the criteria covered can be mapped to the Early Years Educator Qualification. This means that if you choose to progress with your studies to a full Level 3 qualification you can use some of the knowledge gained in the award. Not all pre-registration childminding courses are regulated qualifications.
Being fully accredited means you’ll have to work hard and show commitment to complete it, but it’ll be worth it. If you love children and want to learn about their development and how to give them the best start in life you’ll love this course. It really is an interesting, exciting and inspiring qualification you can be proud of.
So what are you waiting for? Oh yeah... more brilliant reasons...
2. You get free membership
Yep, we said free. What does that mean?
- A six month VIP pass to the PACEY members’ area for exclusive content (practice guides, videos, factsheets, activities) all specially designed to help you grow and flourish as a home-based childcarer
- FREE Level 2 food hygiene course worth £32.99, accredited by the Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH)
- A digital copy of our magazine, the award-winning Childcare Professional
- access to FREE training courses that will be vital to your new career (including Safeguarding, Expectations of Behaviour and Delivering the EYFS)
- Discounts in the PACEY shop on products and training, including your essential first aid training.
This is exclusively for new members, though - the six months free PACEY Learner membership is not available if you're already a PACEY member.
3. You’ll learn how to run your own business and how to prepare for Ofsted's visit with confidence
Becoming a home-based childcare professional means you’ll be your own boss. As Uncle Ben once said to Spiderman (if you're not already familiar with Spiderman, you soon will be when you start working with children) – “with great power comes great responsibility”.
The HBCA doesn’t just teach you about child development, the importance of play, working in partnership with parents or keeping children safe and healthy. It doesn’t just prepare you for meeting the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. You’ll also learn how to run your own business and how to prepare for Ofsted without having a nervous breakdown!
If you’ve done the HBCA with us you won’t be pulling your hair out over paperwork or dreading the day the Ofsted inspector arrives to do your registration visit. You can relax. You’ll be prepared and supported every step of the way with PACEY.
In fact, as part of your HBCA course you can participate in a ‘Preparing for your Registration Visit’ webinar completely FREE! And you’ll be able to ask as many questions as you like. So you’ll be very well prepared when Ofsted comes to call!
4. It’s not just us that think it’s a life changing course.
"I liked the wide range of information for each learning outcome that not only helped you complete the tasks but will also be useful when practising as a childminder."
"The variety of ways in which the tasks were asked to be presented, e.g, leaflets, charts, discussions, made the course interesting and helped me to take in the information more rather than just writing out explanations and descriptions. My assessor was always very helpful and supportive with her feedback and gave me good ideas of the work that can be used to show Ofsted and my parents."
"Discovering how children learn and develop and the importance of play was extremely interesting and knowledge I wish I'd had when I was raising my own children. The parts of the course dealing with the framework and legal requirements were essential and helpful but it is seeing "the bigger picture" of the impact of good childcare on children's immediate and future well-being that makes childcare work so worthwhile."
"I am so pleased that I did this course, first off as a parent and then to be able to put my new skills to practice to help children that I will childmind too, to achieve their full potential in life."
"Thank you for helping me to achieve my goal and making it a very enjoyable learning journey. All the staff I have spoken to at PACEY have been so helpful and my assessor was great."
5. At the end of the course you’ll get to work with children every day.
Probably the best reward of all.
