New food allergens regulations for childcare providers

In September 2014 some changes were announced about regulations on food allergens and new duties were placed on childcare providers.

What does that mean for me?

From 13th December 2014, childcare providers in England and Wales are required to comply with The Food Information Regulation.

This new regulation introduces a requirement for food businesses including childcare providers to give information about the allergenic ingredients used in any food they sell or provide, including pre-packed foods.

This all sounds a bit scary at first, but don’t worry, PACEY is here to help you tick all the boxes to comply with the changes.

What do I need to do?

As an early years and childcare provider you are now required to obtain information about any allergies or intolerances that a child may have and provide allergen information about the food you provide.

Don’t panic, there are simple ways of doing this. You’re not being asked to list all the ingredients in the food that you produce, you just need to document the allergens contained.

The legislation requires that you are accurate, consistent and that your information is verifiable upon challenge.

After feedback from our members, we sourced information from the Food Standards Agency and created loads of helpful information and resources to advise childcare professionals on how to easily comply with the updated food hygiene regulations.
