Developing early language skills can support children's transition to more formal learning and making new friends when they begin school; but the benefits last through life. As a practitioner you can help with your interactions and the language-rich environment you provide. Some children have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) which impact on their language development. Early recognition is important to support children with SLCN and reduce the impact of their difficulties. These benefits can influence children in later life, with functional early language skills often linked to educational attainment, employment and mental health. As practitioners, it is important that we understand how to support children with speech and language challenges. Stories and English as an additional language (EAL)
The Early Years Foundation Stage frameworks say you "may take reasonable steps to provide opportunities for children whose home language is not English to develop and use their home language in play and learning... ". If you have a child with EAL in your setting you may wonder how you can support their language and communication by telling stories. Take our short course to reflect on why this important, and discover some strategies to ensure all children are able to participate in and enjoy stories in your setting.
