Starting Reception – A new definition to support school readiness

PACEY has joined other leading early years organisations to launch a new ‘Starting Reception’ definition to help parents, carers, early years and education professionals prepare children for starting in Reception year at school.

The new definition comes after a report from Kindred Squared on School Readiness highlighted huge differences between teachers and parent perception on what school readiness means. While 9 out of 10 parents said they thought their child was ready for school, teachers said only 1 in 3 were actually ready.

The Starting Reception definition of school readiness is a list of suggested skills and activities for parents to support their children ahead of Reception, focusing on growing independence, building relationships, physical development, and healthy routines. It includes skills like using the toilet independently, talking about feelings, taking turns and sharing, using cutlery and more. Underpinning all this is the importance of a child’s relationship with their parent or carer in building these skills ready for school.

Explore the Starting Reception useful resources and guidance to support children to build on their personal, social, emotional and physical skills ahead of starting school.

Helen Donohoe, Chief Executive at PACEY comments:

“Starting school is a time of transition, requiring strong cooperation between families, schools and early years settings. We were delighted to collaborate on the Starting Reception tool which will make it easier for early education professionals to help families navigate this crucial stage.

We know that childminders are well-placed to work very closely with parents and carers, offering flexible, bespoke and personalised provision and ensuring a smooth transition to school. This is especially valuable for children with more complex needs and SEND.”
